Thank you to everyone who joined us on November 18, 2021 for the inaugural event in the REDI Indigenous Initiatives Speakers Series. This series continues the important conversation that was started during the October 28, 2021 It Starts With Us: Truth Telling event to commemorate Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Sorry, Not Sorry featured a warm and frank conversation between Derek Thompson, the REDI Indigenous Initiatives Advisor, and Kukpi7 Chief Wayne Christian of the Splatsin First Nation & Tribal Chief for the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council.

On October 18, 2021, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with First Nations leaders in Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory after holidaying in Tofino on September 30 – the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In an era of Truth and Reconciliation this dialogue highlighted the importance of showing up for the conversation.

Kukpi7 Christian spoke about the importance of presence and persona, and the implications of absence and ignorance. He also discussed the need and urgency for action in addressing the legacy of oppression and assimilation of Indigenous peoples in Canada.

What is the Indigenous Initiatives Speakers Series?

The Indigenous Initiatives Speakers Series is an original and important platform to begin, continue and advance the conversation about telling the truth and reconciling for the future. There has never been a more important time to call upon our elders, leaders, scholars, and people to speak about our individual and shared truths and to anchor compassion in reconciling for the future.
