Back by popular demand, please join us for another It Starts With Us: Conflict Engagement session with UBC’s Conflict Theatre team. This event will use an active and engaging approach to discuss and learn about conflict engagement. Read about the previous session here

When: August 4, 2021 | 12:00-2:00 p.m.

Topic: Conflict Engagement

  • Audience members will watch “Department Discipline” — a community-created play developed by UBC’s Conflict Theatre team — while having the opportunity to actively participate and try out different conflict engagement strategies to see how the outcome of the interaction can be changed. No acting experience required and no pressure everyone is welcome to attend and participate in a way that’s most comfortable for them
  • About the play: Welcome to the Department of Excellence (where all of our plays are set). A department head must discipline a professor for making a racist ‘joke’ to a student. Meanwhile, another professor demands that a junior staff member in their probation period conceal an ineligible expense, but a senior staff member overhears this interaction and alerts the department head. The department head now has to decide what to do next

What Will I Learn?

The essentials of conflict engagement – an important tool in standing up to injustice and supporting our commitments and values.
