International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination 2021

Stand up against racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes

Since 1979, International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (IDERD) has been observed on March 21. It marks the day in 1960 when police in Sharpeville South Africa opened fire and killed 69 people who were peacefully demonstrating against apartheid “pass laws”.

This year is the twentieth anniversary of the adoption of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action, a comprehensive program for combating racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance.

The theme for IDERD 2021 is “Youth standing up against racism” and #FightRacism. It calls on each of us to stand up against racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes.
